Bajos del Toro Waterfall
What an amazing sight! Bajos del Toro Waterfall, one of the most impressive and tallest waterfalls in the nation, is tucked away in a valley between the Poás and Rincon de la Vieja Volcanoes, in the Bajos del Toro Cloud Forest, about 1 1/2 hours from San Jose. It has a 90-meter (300-foot) plunge. There are numerous waterfalls to find in the Bajos del Toro región, which is excellent for hiking. The most well-known waterfall is Bajos del Toro Waterfall, commonly referred to as Catarata del Toro and literally translated as the Bull Waterfall. As you make your way to the waterfall, you pass through verdant cloud forests. Before you see it, you'll hear it: the sound of water rushing 400 feet into the crater of an extinct, mossy volcano. You can reach the base of the waterfall by ascending a flight of steep steps.
The waterfall is in the little village of Bajos del Toro, which has neither taxis nor public transit. It is possible to travel to the waterfall in a rented car, however a qualified naturalist guide is strongly advised. Guides are highly knowledgeable about the environment in ways that a visitor could never be, and they have developed their abilities to recognize distinctive cloud forest bird cries and notice signs of wildlife. Additionally, you'll see more and save time!
