Llanos de Cortez Waterfall

About 16 miles (or 30 minutes) south of Liberia in Bagaces is where you'll find Llanos de Cortez Waterfall. Llanos de Cortez has streams of water cascading over a rock wall and is broader than it is tall at roughly 50 feet wide and 12 feet tall. On a hot day, you can cool yourself in the crystal-clear pool at the foot of the falls. There is also a tiny beach with white sand, which is great for a picnic or lunch. The 10-minute climb down to the waterfall from the parking lot is steep but brief. There are birds and monkeys that can be observed along the path through the beautiful, deep forest that leads to the falls. Llanos de Cortez does not charge admission, although donations to the neighborhood school are appreciated. Excursions to waterfalls with a guide can be arranged.

The fact that it is not a difficult trek to get to the base of this waterfall is one of its best features. You'll be at the base in about ten minutes. In the past, you had to negotiate some challenging wooden stairs and do a lot of root climbing. There are, however, new, sturdy steps that you can descend. It is a lot more enjoyable! Anyone in reasonable physical condition should have little trouble reaching the base and making the ascent.
