Barbados Private Estate 1780

In 1780, servants of Edward Lascelles, the first Earl of Harewood, distilled and barreled rum, which was later shipped to the Earl's home in England, where it was bottled and stored in the cellar. The rum remained undiscovered for 231 years until David Lascelles, the 8th Earl of Harewood and Queen Elizabeth II's first cousin, discovered it.

Because of the prolonged aging, the rum was able to fetch the following price at auction – $10, 667. When the rum was discovered in the cellar of the family mansion, it was covered in mold and spider web. Before the bottles were auctioned, servants spent several hours cleaning them. The bottles were made of hand-blown glass, and the rum was auctioned at Christie's, becoming one of the most expensive rums ever auctioned at that price.

According to reports, David Lascelles returned the proceeds from the sale of 12 bottles to the Caribbean people through the Geraldine Connor Foundation as reparations.
