Brazil (1985)

Brazil is a 1985 dystopian black comedy film directed by Terry Gilliam. Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce) is a harried technocrat in an overly complicated and inefficient futuristic civilization. He fantasizes about a life free of technology and bureaucracy, where he may spend eternity with the woman of his dreams. Lowry meets Jill Layton (Kim Greist), the woman he has been chasing in his dreams while attempting to rectify the wrongful arrest of one Harry Buttle (Brian Miller). Meanwhile, the bureaucracy has blamed him for a thread of terrorist bombings, putting Sam and Jill's lives in jeopardy.

Despite its popularity in Europe, the film's initial release in North America was a flop. It's since become a cult classic. Brazil was ranked the 54th best British film of all time by the British Film Institute in 1999. It was voted the 24th best British film ever in a survey of 150 actors, directors, writers, producers, and reviewers for Time Out magazine in 2017.
