Taxi Driver (1976)
Taxi Driver is a 1976 American film directed by Martin Scorsese. The film received numerous awards and nominations, including the Palme d'Or at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival and four nominations at the 49th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (for De Niro), and Best Supporting Actress (for Foster).
Despite all of Scorsese and De Niro's subsequent collaborations, Taxi Driver remains the most iconic Scorsese/De Niro film. In the film, De Niro plays Travis Bickle, a solitary cab driver who believes he is the only one who can clean up the crime he witnesses every night as he travels around New York City. The film is basically about Travis' mental health deteriorating as he becomes obsessed with a woman and a small daughter, and you realize how unwell he is at the end. De Niro is mesmerizing in the part, proving that he can drive a film and make you sympathize with a complex character.
