Raging Bull (1980)
Any best-of collection Many of Robert De Niro's works with Martin Scorsese will have Raging Bull, in which he plays boxer Jake La Motta, maybe his best performance. De Niro portrays La Motta, a wounded, prideful man who has lots of talent in the ring but is hugely self-destructive outside of it, for which he got in terrific condition. Raging Bull is a film about failure as well as achievement, and it features some of Scorsese's greatest direction in his impressive career.
Raging Bull is one of Robert De Niro's most powerful performances of all time, among all the films he has been in. His depiction of Jake LaMotta, a former boxer turned stand-up comic, is a stunning portrait of a man you love to hate. You pity, sympathize and hate him all at the same time. It's no surprise that he won an Oscar for this performance and that Raging Bull is still considered one of De Niro's greatest performances.
