Bubiyan Island
With an area of 863 km2, Bubiyan Island is the largest of the Kuwaiti coastal island group, located in the northwestern corner of the Persian Gulf (333 sq mi). Currently, the Mubarak Al Kabeer Port is being built. Bubiyan Island will house power plants and substations as part of Mubarak Al Kabeer Port's development. In Subiya, a 5,000-megawatt power plant has already been constructed.
The island is mostly flat, however sections of the shores are covered in salt marshes. In the center of the island, there are several intermittent wadis. The Al-Zubayr channel separates it from the Iraqi coast in the northeast, and the Al-Sabiyyah channel separates it from the Kuwaiti mainland in the southwest. The latter canal curves around Bubiyan Island's northern tip, separating it from Warbah Island. Bubiyan is connected to the mainland by a 2.38 km (1.48 mi) long concrete girder bridge erected in 1981-1983 and completed in February 1983, 5.4 km (3 mi) northwest of Ras al Barshah, the southernmost point.
The island has become a one-stop destination for migratory birds due to low visitation. If tourists are lucky, they may be able to observe a few rare bird species. The island is popular among locals for a relaxing picnic or overnight stay. In the foreseeable future, the island could become a significant maritime port. With this landscape, the island is said to be one of the most beautiful islands in Kuwait.
