With an area of 863 km2, Bubiyan Island is the largest of the Kuwaiti coastal island group, located in the northwestern corner of the Persian Gulf (333 sq mi). Currently, the Mubarak Al Kabeer Port is being built. Bubiyan Island will house power plants and substations as part of Mubarak Al Kabeer Port's development. Bubiyan is connected to the mainland by a 2.38 km (1.48 mi) long concrete girder bridge erected in 1981-1983 and completed in February 1983, 5.4 km (3 mi) northwest of Ras al Barshah, the southernmost point.
