Catedral Basilica de Zacatecas
The Catedral Basilica de Zacatecas is a prominent church located in Zacatecas. The building was built in 1729 and is built of pink stone, a popular local stone. The overall appearance of the church is built in the Baroque style. In 1993, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Zacatecas was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The main facade of this structure is considered one of the most outstanding examples of Baroque art in Mexico.
Previous to the current building, there were two temples. The first was built in 1568 as a city parish, which was small. A second temple was built in place of the previous one, and it is known that it was consecrated in the year 1625. In order to build a larger temple worthy of the city of "the aristocrats of silver" and one that would have more capacity, everything built was demolished, and the walls of the current building were raised in its place. The first stone was laid by Don Jose de Izarraguirre, the Episcopal Vicar. The work was dedicated in the year 1752 and was consecrated until 1841.
On January 26, 1863, Pope Pius IX issued the bull that established the Diocese of Zacatecas, elevating the temple to cathedral status. Finally, in 1959, Pope John XXIII permitted the construction of temples annexed to existing ones, dedicated to the Santo Cristo and Our Lady of Zacatecas. The third temple, already with three naves, had its baroque wooden altarpieces, which were replaced by those of quarry, possibly designed by the Valencian architect Manuel Tolsa between 1803 and 1847, except for the largest.
