Memorial Presbyterian Church (PCUSA)
The Memorial Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) is a historic church built in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1889 by American industrialist Henry Morrison Flagler.
During the Territorial Period of Florida's history, the Presbyterian congregation in St. Augustine was founded in June 1824. The Presbyterian Church was created thanks to the efforts of the Reverend Dr. William McWhir, a minister with the Presbytery of Georgia. Dr. McWhir returned to Georgia after the church was able to function on its own. The group soon began making plans to build a place of worship, and work on a church began in January 1825 and lasted for five years. The structure was completed in 1830, and the congregation continued to increase. The church has serviced a variety of community functions over the years. Union troops used the facility for military purposes throughout the Civil War, and no services were held there. The church resumed weekly services when the war ended. For almost 200 years, Memorial Presbyterian Church has not only remained a major figure in St. Augustine but also been a major contributor to the community around it.
The present sanctuary was donated by Henry Morrison Flagler and dedicated in 1890 as a memorial to his daughter, Jenny Louise Benedict, who died from complications from childbirth. Mr. Flagler, his first wife, Mary, daughter Jenny Louise, and granddaughter Marjorie, are entombed in the Flagler family mausoleum at Memorial. In 2012, CNN included Memorial Presbyterian Church in a list of one of the top eight religious wonders to visit in the US.
