Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist - Savannah, GA

The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist is a Roman Catholic cathedral and minor basilica in Lafayette Square, Savannah, Georgia, the US. It is located at 222 East Harris Street. It is the mother church of Savannah's Roman Catholic Diocese.


The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, a magnificent Savannah attraction, is an architectural marvel and the seat of the diocese of Savannah. The picturesque Savannah skyline is set against a stunning backdrop of pointed arches and superb decorations in the French-Gothic style. The first French colonists founded it in 1700, and while the early structures were destroyed by fire. The Right Reverend William H. Gross, C.Ss.R., laid the cornerstone of the new Cathedral on November 19, 1873. The new structure was dedicated to “Our Lady of Perpetual Help,” a name the Cathedral retained for 10 years.
