Chongsheng Temple
Chongsheng Temple is a magnificent complex that includes the iconic Three Pagodas. The Temple was once the royal temple of the Kingdom of Dali and one of the largest Buddhist centers in Southeast Asia. It has a long and rich history, as nine Dali emperors gave up their status and became monks at this temple. The temple was severely damaged by earthquakes and wars but was restored to its former glory.
The temple complex covers an area of more than 60 hectares and consists of several halls, pavilions, towers, gardens, and ponds. The most impressive feature is the Three Pagodas, which are arranged in a triangular shape and stand between the Cangshan Mountain and the Erhai Lake.
The tallest pagoda is 69.13 meters high and is one of the oldest and tallest pagodas in China. The other two pagodas are 42.19 meters high, and have 16 stories each. The Three Pagodas are a symbol of Dali and a masterpiece of ancient architecture.
The main hall of Chongsheng Temple is the Daxiong Hall, which houses three giant statues of Buddha, representing the past, present, and future. The hall is also decorated with exquisite murals, sculptures, and carvings that showcase the artistic achievements of the Dali Kingdom.
Behind the Daxiong Hall, there are several other halls dedicated to different Buddhist deities, such as Guanyin, and Amitabha. Each hall has its style and charm and displays various relics and artifacts related to Buddhism.
Chongsheng Temple is not only a place of worship, but also a place of learning. There is a Buddhist academy on the site, where monks and scholars study and teach Buddhism. There is also a museum that exhibits more than 2,000 cultural relics from different dynasties, such as bronze bells, stone steles, porcelain wares, and Buddhist scriptures. You will be amazed by the beauty and grandeur of the temple complex, and feel the peace and tranquility of the surroundings.
