White Horse Temple

White Horse Temple is considered to be the first Buddhist temple in China, and the cradle of Chinese Buddhism. It was built under the patronage of Emperor Ming of the Eastern Han Dynasty, who had a dream of a golden man with a halo.

He sent two envoys to the western regions to learn about Buddhism, and they returned with two Indian monks, many Buddhist scriptures and statues, and a white horse that carried them.

The White Horse Temple has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, but it still retains its ancient style and charm. The main temple is located on the south-north central axis and includes the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Hall of the Great Buddha, the Hall of Mahavira, the Hall of Guidance, the Terrace, and the Pilu Pavilion.

Each hall has its own characteristics and statues that reflect different aspects of Buddhism. Besides that, the hall also displays some ancient paintings, sculptures, steles, and inscriptions.

The White Horse Temple is not only a Chinese temple but also an international one. To the west of the main temple is a new area where you can appreciate temples from different countries. They showcase the diversity and harmony of Buddhism around the world.

The White Horse Temple is not only a place to appreciate historical and cultural relics, but also a place to experience spiritual enlightenment and peace. The temple is surrounded by nature and tranquility. You can hear the sound of chanting, bells, and drums that create a solemn and serene atmosphere. You can also join the monks in their daily rituals and prayers, or meditate in the quiet corners of the temple.

The White Horse Temple has a rich collection of Buddhist scriptures, relics, artworks, and literature. It has also been a center for cultural exchange and dialogue between China and other countries. Many eminent monks and scholars have visited or stayed in this temple.

The White Horse Temple is one of the best Buddhist temples in China because it has a profound influence on the development and spread of Buddhism in China and beyond. It is a place where you can learn about the history and teachings of Buddhism.
