Columbia Film Industry Company (Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc.) is an American film production and distribution company. Columbia Pictures is currently part of the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, which is owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment, a subsidiary of Sony Corporation. The studio was founded in 1919 by brothers Jack Cohn and Harry Cohn with Joe Brandt, then it was called Cohn-Brandt-Cohn Film Sales, the first film came out in August 1922. It changed its name to Columbia Pictures in 2004. Columbia began to grow in the late 1920s, with a successful collaboration with director Frank Capra.
In 1982, the studio was acquired by Coca-Cola. In the same year, Columbia launched TriStar Pictures to join the speculation along with HBO and CBS. 5 years later, Coca-Cola merged Columbia Pictures and Tri-Star to become Columbia Pictures Entertainment. After a while, the studio was acquired by Sony in 1989. Columbia Pictures is now part of the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group. The company's logo is the girl holding the torch, a literary figure that symbolizes feminism in the United States. At that time, there were dozens of actresses who claimed to be the models for that icon, but none of this information was officially confirmed.
