Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. (also known as Sony Pictures and abbreviated as SPE) is an American entertainment company that produces, acquires, and distributes entertainment films (theatrical dramas, television shows, and videos) across multiple platforms. It operates as a subsidiary of Sony Entertainment Inc, the parent company of both the music and film businesses of Sony Corporation. Headquartered in Culver City, California, the company includes Sony's film, television production, and distribution units. The group's revenue for the financial year 2015 (April 2015 – March 2016) was reported to be $8.3 billion. May 9, 2002, Sony Pictures Animation was established to develop characters, storylines, and feature films, and SPI will specialize in digital production and cinematography. At the same time, SPI produced two short films, the short film winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Short The Chubbchubbs! and the short film Early Bloomer, a result of examining the strengths and weaknesses of CGI animation production.
The studio's first feature film, Hunting Season, premiered in September 2006, becoming Sony's second-highest-grossing home entertainment film of 2007 and the basis for two sequels released as direct-to-video. The studio's second feature film, Surf's Up, was released in June 2007, received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and also won two Annie Awards.
