Pixar Animation Studios is a famous American animation studio with headquarters in Emeryville, California. Pixar is known for its computer-generated imagery (CGI) 3D animation films designed with PhotoRealistic RenderMan, its own rendering software, dedicated to creating high-quality images. Pixar was founded in 1979 as a graphics group under the computer division of Lucasfilm before splitting into its own company in 1986 under the investment of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who became the main shareholder of the company.
The Walt Disney Company acquired Pixar in 2006 for $7.4 billion, making Jobs the largest shareholder of Disney. The studio has received 15 Academy Awards, 7 Golden Globe Awards, and 11 Grammy Awards, in addition to numerous other awards and recognitions. Since the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature was born in 2001, the majority of Pixar films received nominations, with 8 wins: Finding Nemo (2003), Superman Family (2004), Chef Mouse (2007), Love Robot (2008), Soaring (2009), Toy Story 3 (2010), The Ruffled Princess (2012) and Emotional Puzzles (2015). Monster Company (2001) and Car Kingdom (2006) are the only two films that have received nominations. Soaring and Toy Story 3 are the 2nd and 3rd animated films to be nominated for an Oscar for best picture (the first being Beauty and the Beast). On September 6, 2009, Pixar filmmakers John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, and Lee Unkrich were honored at the Venice Film Festival with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
