Doubting Thomas
Given the free Wi-Fi and inventive coffee there, as well as the all-day menu that's worth lingering over, visiting this charming Historic Filipinotown café is already simple. Small-batch, seasonal pastries like blackberry rhubarb galettes, pecan and caramel coffee cake, and passion fruit pie with graham cracker crust are so delicious you won't want to share them. They pair well with pour-over coffee and specialties like vanilla-and-orange cappuccinos. You're looking for something stronger, right? Rice bowls, breakfast sandwiches, and toast from the unpretentious menu should do the trick. If you want to take the enchantment home, you can purchase Doubting Thomas' own bean blend and house-made concentrates for matcha, chai, and other beverages on the premises.
There is plenty on the menu to keep you from getting bored if you were to rent one of the flats upstairs. While you can get cereal or bacon and eggs here, you can also order a pork shoulder burrito, a large piece of bread topped with burrata and tomatoes, or a beef rice bowl with an egg on top. The meal is full and hearty, and some dishes, like the burrito, are outstanding. Others, such as the rice bowl, turn out to be a little dull, but not enough to be compensated for by one of their homemade pastries (made with whatever fruit they found at the farmers market).
