Eckernförde
The unusual hourglass shape of Eckernförde, which is situated at one end of the Eckernförde Bay in Schleswig-Holstein, grabs attention right away. To the east is the Baltic Sea, and to the west is the interior lake of Windebyer Noor. It has been a tourist destination for the all of the 20th century, thus the service infrastructure is excellent. Renting a bicycle is one of the greatest ways to explore this charming Baltic Sea coast town. Undoubtedly, you must sample some of the fresh seafood from the area.
The name of the town of Eckernförde, which also appears in the name of the town district of Borby, is of mixed etymology but was inspired by the name of a Danish castle that was originally situated close to the present-day town. The 13th-century Liber Census Daniae refers to this stronghold as Ykrnburgh. The town adopted Eherneborgh as its official seal in 1441. The first syllable is the contemporary Danish word "egern," which means squirrel, and the second syllable is the Low German suffix "-förde," which means fjord. Two official seals used by the town in 1602 and 1624 bear the -förde ending in Latinized form. The appearance of a squirrel in the town's coat of arms, a design element originally noted by the 1441 seal, reflects the origins of the town's name.
