Evangeline Oak Park - St. Martinville

Le Petit Paris (Little Paris), also known as St. Martinville, was founded in the 1800s and is currently undergoing modernization while retaining its past and present. Since the late nineteenth century, the most frequented location in St. Martinville has been Evangeline Oak Park, which is centered on an old live oak tree on the Bayou Teche.

The tree bears the name of Evangeline, the protagonist of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1847 poem of the same name. Evangeline was long thought to be a genuine narrative of the British exile of the Acadians from Nova Scotia beginning in 1755 due to the paucity of historical study earlier to that period. The epic poem gained popularity right away and was widely read. The residents of St. Martinville adopted it since it is partially set in south Louisiana and refers to local landmarks including the Atchafalaya, Bayou Teche, and "the villages of St. Martin and St. Maur". Visit the local flora and animals, such as an old cypress tree and an occasional alligator, by taking a stroll along the Boardwalk.
