Festival of La Tirana

The Festival of La Tirana, which begins on July 11 and ends on July 19, is held in Tarapacá. Every year this festival attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world. In this celebration, religion is mixed with indigenous traditions, dancing, drums, and dances for the Christian Virgin.

The Festival of La Tirana is the most famous and popular festival of religious celebration in Northern Chile. In fact, the celebration is of Andean origin and has a lot to do with the Pachamama sect, which is the Mother Earth of the Aymará and Quechua peoples. In other words, the celebration of La Tirana is a clear demonstration of the mingling of Native American and European cultures.

This popular festival usually lasts a week and includes a series of rituals, songs, and dances with the Altiplanic festival. The most famous representative dance is "Diablada". The dancers wear colorful and demonic masks and confront the force led by the Archangel Miguel. In addition, throughout the week, the celebration features music made of zithers and brass instruments non-stop.
