Virgen de Guadalupe
The famous festival Virgen de Guadalupe is written as the celebration of Virgen de Guadalupe that takes place in the Atacama desert, most specifically in the town of Ayquina (80 km from Calama). This is the most important celebration in the Antofagasta Region.
To this day, the Ayquina religious and cultural event takes place in honor of La Virgen de Guadalupe. It takes place every year and usually lasts a week. The main holidays are September 7 and 8. During these days, thousands of devotees gather and perform a variety of typical pagan-religious dances. Examples include Diablada, Tinku, or Caporal dance. This is a tourist attraction when coming to the famous Virgen de Guadalupe festival in Chile.
On September 7th, all gathered to wait for the 8th. At midnight, the sky lit up with spectacular fireworks displays to celebrate the “Pastor of Ayquina” celebration. On September 8, thousands of pilgrims arrive in the town of Ayquina, they participate in religious dances throughout the day to thank La Virgen.
