Gallo-Roman Museum, Tongeren

The Gallo-Roman Museum in Tongeren (Dutch: Gallo-Romeins Museum, French: Musée Gallo-romain, German: Gallo-Römisches Museum) is an archeological museum. It is dedicated to the region's prehistoric and Roman eras in southeast Flanders. The museum was founded in 1954 and moved into its current location in 1994. It was named European Museum of the Year in 2011.


The Gallo-Roman Museum, located in Tongeren, Belgium's oldest town, is a must-see for anybody interested in archeology. It is dedicated to the region's prehistoric and Roman eras in southeast Flanders. The permanent display shows the history of man in the region, from the Neanderthals to the Romans. Visitors may listen to an audio tour along the trip to learn about the numerous cultures that formerly occupied the country. Displays with lifelike figurines of ancient people bring these stories to life. Visitors may also marvel at over 2,000 pieces from the museum's own collection, which are all tastefully displayed in a unique set.
