Groeningemuseum, Bruges
The Groeningemuseum, located in the picturesque historic city of Bruges (also known as the "Venice of the North"), gives a broad overview of Belgian visual art history. The collection comprises works by Belgian painters spanning from the 14th century Flemish primitives through modern art in the 1900s. Along with works by René Magritte, Emile Claus, Gerard David, Bram Bogart, and others, visitors may catch a glimpse of treasures like Hans Memling's Moreel Triptych and Jan van Eyck's renowned Madonna with Canon Joris Van der Paele.
Temporary exhibitions are occasionally held at the museum, so check the calendar ahead of time. Tickets to the museum also include admission to the Artentshuis museum on the opposite side of the Arentshof garden, which is a wonderful touch.
