James Mangold directed the psychological drama film Girl, Interrupted in 1999. The film is based on Susanna Kaysen's memoir of the same name, and it follows a young lady who spends 18 months in a psychiatric institution between 1967 and 1968 after attempting suicide.
On December 21, 1999, a limited release of Girl, Interrupted was released, followed by a wide release on January 14, 2000. The film got mixed reviews from reviewers, however, Ryder and Jolie's performances received great praise. Jolie took up the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role.
