Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology
The Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (GSMST) is a public special school in Lawrenceville, Georgia, part of the Gwinnett County Public Schools system. Students are admitted through a county-wide lottery, with participants required to meet a number of requirements since the school lost its charter status in 2016. It places a strong emphasis on project-based STEM education. It is one of the most prestigious high schools in the state due to its rigorous curriculum and high student graduation rate.
The GSMST is notable for its emphasis on technology. Every student receives a laptop with pre-installed software such as AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Premiere Pro, thanks to contracts with Lenovo and HP Inc. Teachers and students have access to SMART boards and overhead LCD projectors throughout the school.
The school provides challenging high-level courses, including a number of Advanced Placement courses. Honors and Gifted Chemistry, Honors and Gifted Physics, Accelerated Integrated Algebra, Accelerated Integrated Geometry, Accelerated Integrated Precalculus, Honors and Gifted Language Arts, Fundamentals of Engineering I, Foreign Language (Chinese I, German I, Spanish I, and Spanish II), and one elective class are required for freshmen. Some of these classes are taught in blocks, allowing students to earn up to nine Carnegie units in ninth grade.
The school's primary focus is mathematics, science, and technology, but other subjects are also taught at the highest levels available. Each course is designed to incorporate content from other courses into its own lessons in order to demonstrate the course's history and practical applications.
