The School for the Talented and Gifted (TAG)
The School for the Talented and Gifted at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center (TAG or TAG Magnet) is a public college-preparatory STEM magnet high school in the Dallas Oak Cliff neighborhood. The school is part of the Dallas Independent School District and serves grades 9-12 students. It is well-known for its liberal arts curriculum, Advanced Placement Program, and intensive learning style.
During the spring semester, a screening process is started to place incoming students from the Dallas Independent School District at the TAG Magnet for the following year. The screening committee, which consists of the principal, the counselor, teachers, and community representatives, employs a holistic case-study approach. Academic transcripts, TAKS/ITBS scores, a behavioral assessment, a student portfolio, and anecdotal information are the identification criteria used in the screening process. Strict adherence to pre-established guidelines ensures that the student population is ethnically balanced.
The School for the Talented and Gifted follows the state's Distinguished Achievement Program and emphasizes the Advanced Placement curriculum — TAG offers 30 AP courses, and students must take 12 to graduate. Students at TAG may conduct field research via partnerships with local universities, take electives such as fashion marketing, and enroll in mini-courses like ballroom dancing or glass blowing during interim terms.
Newsweek named the school the best public high school in the United States in 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2010. TAG was named the best public high school in the country by U.S. News & World Report in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016.
