Highness Café & Tea Room

Highness Café & Tea Room is one of London's best cafes. You'll be pulled in by the window display of this quaint café and cake shop, where thick peanut butter brownies are tucked amongst iced blood orange cakes and plump sultana scones. If you're lucky, there may even be samplers available at the cash register. This restaurant has a worn-in, cozy atmosphere thanks to the hardwood floors and the mismatched set of wooden chairs and tables, which includes an old sewing machine table. Back behind the counter, chalkboards list the menu, which includes brunch, sandwiches, and jacket potatoes. Although there are a few popular window seats on the ground floor, for more comfort, take the spiral staircase up to the mezzanine floor.

The delicious sweet stuff kept the highs going. A big slice of pistachio and chocolate cake (£3.75) was served on exquisite china and had a somewhat molten consistency. It melted perfectly in the mouth. Warm, flaky, and soft, the $3 big sultana-studded scone was served with little (perhaps too tiny) pots of jam and clotted cream.

The welcoming staff, drinks, and pastries are the restaurant's highlights; an artichoke and avocado sandwich was adequate rather than outstanding, and the börek (spinach and feta wrapped in filo dough) lacked crispness. On a relaxing day, come here and work your way through the sweets.
