Karaway Stratford

As any doughnut would know, for the past five years or more, this family-run bakery has been selling the most amazing and award-winning rye-based bakes at Borough Market and other locations throughout the capital. It even had a brief fling with a Westfield Stratford location, which has since reopened after closing. At Karaway, you may find a small selection of toasties, pastries, and cakes as well as a wide variety of baked bread to take home. Karaway has a small café area with only four tables outside the Waitrose in the Great Eastern Market retail center.

There are a ton of samples, but the kind, knowledgeable staff will help you navigate the flavors, including traditional ryes like the dark, dense Lithuanian Scalded, which has a delectable caraway aftertaste, as well as sourdoughs made entirely of rye and specialty ryes stuffed with dried fruits, nuts, and spices. The options may be overwhelming, but perhaps Karaway is here to stay this time so you can return and try them all.
