In the Name of the Father
Jim Sheridan co-wrote and directed the 1993 biographical crime drama film In the Name of the Father. The Guildford Four were wrongfully convicted of the 1974 Guildford pub bombings, which murdered four off-duty British troops and a civilian. Terry George and Jim Sheridan adapted the screenplay from Gerry Conlon's 1990 autobiography Proved Innocent: The Story of Gerry Conlon of the Guildford Four.
Day-Lewis portrays the real-life Gerry Conlon, an Irishman who was wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for his alleged participation in a 1974 IRA explosion in Guildford, England, earning him his second Oscar nomination. Day-Lewis masterfully portrays Conlon's battle to preserve his humanity in the face of abuse, torture, and wrongful imprisonment in the film, which follows Conlon's 14-year quest to clear his name. Conlon's struggle for justice and truth was aided by Day-Lewis' ability to strike the appropriate mix between sensitivity and tenacity.
