The Unbearable Lightness of Being
The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a 1988 American drama film that is based on Milan Kundera's 1984 novel of the same name. It stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Juliette Binoche, and Lena Olin and was directed by Philip Kaufman, who also co-wrote the script with Jean-Claude Carrière. The film depicts Czechoslovak creative and intellectual life during the Prague Spring, as well as the impact of communist persecution following the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 on the principal protagonists.
In this adaptation of the renowned Milan Kundera novel, Day-Lewis' Tomas, a Czech brain surgeon and noted playboy, falls for two women—one who is content with their loose and unattached romance, the other looking for a serious and cerebral connection. Choosing between Lena Olin and Juliette Binoche is a challenging battle in and of itself, but Day-biggest Lewis's problem is convincingly conveying Kundera's protagonist of political love story—and his internal conflicts with his own personal philosophies—to the screen. Day-Lewis, of course, is the only person capable of accomplishing such a thing.
