My Left Foot
My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown, or simply My Left Foot, is a biographical comedy-drama film directed by Jim Sheridan and written by Sheridan and Shane Connaughton from Christy Brown's 1954 book of the same name. It stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Brown, an Irish man born with cerebral palsy who could only control his left foot in a co-production between Ireland and the United Kingdom. Brown was born into a low-income working-class household and went on to become a writer and artist. In supporting roles, Brenda Fricker, Ray McAnally, Hugh O'Conor, Fiona Shaw, and Cyril Cusack appear.
In Jim Sheridan's famous biography of artist Christy Brown, a working-class Irishman born with cerebral palsy who can only use his left foot, Day-Lewis received his first Oscar nomination and won for Best Actor. While Day-Lewis had previously established himself as a talented actor, it was this picture that catapulted him to international fame. My Left Foot is a victorious, nuanced part that showcases Day Lewis's attention to detail, realism, and empathy. It is not just his best performance, but also one of the best performances in film history.
