Phantom Thread
Phantom Thread is a 2017 American historical drama film starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Lesley Manville, and Vicky Krieps, and written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Day-Lewis plays an haute couture tailor who chooses a teenage waitress, portrayed by Krieps, as his muse in this film set in 1950s London. Day-Lewis' final cinematic role was in this picture. The film is Anderson's first to be shot outside of the United States, with main filming commencing in Lythe, England in January 2017.
Day-Lewis and filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson take a step back from the large, bold, and boisterous in their second collaboration to produce a nuanced and beautiful meditation on creative genius and the complexities of love. Reynolds Woodcock, a great designer who outfits the women of London's elite society, is played by Day-Lewis. When he meets the beautiful Alma, though, his life is turned upside down; after choosing her as his latest muse, he discovers that her presence has a permanent impact on his work—for good or for bad. Day-Lewis gives a tremendous human performance in what may be his final on-screen role, once again making the exceptional reachable and universal.
