The Indian Law Institute was founded in 1956 with the primary goal of promoting and conducting legal studies in India. In 2004, the Indian Law Institute was given university status. The Institute's objectives, as stated in its Memorandum of Association, is to cultivate the science of law, to promote advanced studies and research in law in order to meet the social, economic, and other needs of the Indian people, to promote systematization of law, to encourage and conduct investigations in legal and allied fields, to improve legal education, to impart legal instruction, and to publish studies, books, periodicals, and other legal publications.
The Institute is a self-governing organization that is governed by the Societies Registration Act of 1860. The Indian Law Institute has the independence and academic freedom it needs to achieve its goals. The Institute today has almost 3,000 members, representing those who are interested in the study and advancement of law.
