John V. Phelps
John was born in Brookland, Arkansas, and is a principal at Womack Phelps. He graduated with honors from Arkansas State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969 and from the University of Memphis School of Law with a Juris Doctorate in 1972.
His practice has traditionally centered on civil jury trials, generally for defendants, but occasionally for selected plaintiffs. He has tried over 150 cases, winning 95% of the cases he should have won and losing 95% of the cases he should have lost. This, he believes, demonstrates the value and merit of the jury trial system.
He has spent most of his career to the American Board of Trial Advocates, www.abota.org, a national trial lawyer organization open exclusively by invitation. The entire goal of ABOTA is to protect the constitutional right to a jury trial in civil proceedings, which is guaranteed by the 7th Amendment.
He served as National President in 2006, and his commitment to the organization is demonstrated by his engagement on the National Board of Directors and as a Master in Trial Presentations.
He supports the ABOTA programs encouraging lawyer "civility" and the drive to put a commitment to civility in the oath of every lawyer authorized to practice in every state, in addition to ABOTA's efforts at professional idealism.
He believes that all lawyers should be "ladies and gentlemen" in their interactions with one another at all times, and that this attitude is a component of professional integrity, a commitment to justice, and civic virtue.
