Jus De Bissap – Roselle Juice
Here's a primer on African plants. The continent, particularly its western region, is home to the fragrant flowering plant roselle. Its dried cranberry-flavored petals can be infused with sugar water to make a tasty drink. Actually, it's more like an infusion, but the difference is minor enough to be overlooked. Hibiscus tea is a common name for the drink, while Jus de Bissap is a fancier French name.
While the juice is arguably Senegal's national drink, it is also popular in Togo. Nothing beats serving Jus de Bissap with mint leaves and ice for a quick escape from Togo's year-round oppressive weather.
Because of the spread of the Roselle plant, dark red-purple juice can be found in many parts of the world. It is adaptable and can be combined with a variety of flavors such as vanilla, orange essence, or apple juice.
