Kuala Belait
While Kuala Belait lacks the tourist attractions of Bandar Seri Begawan and the natural beauty of Ulu Temburong, it has its own allure. Brunei's largest district is Belait. It is half the size of Brunei but only has a sixth of the population, with a population density of only 27 persons per square kilometre.
The majority of the population lives near Kuala Belait, the coastal district capital, and Seria, the oil town. While the shore has mostly been industrialized, the interior of Belait is still wild and undeveloped. Villages can be found on its high slopes and thick vegetation. The Belait River is the most prominent feature in Belait and Brunei's longest river. It begins in the Labi Forest Reserve and winds its way through the district's interior until emptying into the South China Sea west of Kuala Belait.
For generations, the Belait River has nourished the people of western Brunei, much like the Brunei River has done for Kampong Ayer in the east. It is important for transportation since it allows locals to bypass the forest by boat. It has also served as a source of drinking water and has been utilized to raise crops.
