The Kyrgyz Russian Slavic University is a university in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan's capital, that is jointly operated by the Kyrgyz government and the Russian government. In 1992, the KRSU was founded. The Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Russian Federation was signed on June 10, 1992, in Moscow, and the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University was established in 1993. The school's policies were established in legislation by the governments of Russia and Kyrgyzstan by February 1994. The Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University was founded on February 14 of that year by the State Committee of the Russian Federation for Higher Education and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The university has worked with the Yeltsin Foundation from its inception, and it continues to be a reliable partner today. The foundation has provided financial assistance to the university in the form of grants for 50 KRSU students as well as funds to improve university equipment. Knowing this, Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev named the institution after Boris Yeltsin in 2004 as a mark of admiration for the former Russian President's support and encouragement in the establishment of the KRSU.
