Lake Monona
The city of Madison, Wisconsin, borders Lake Monona on three sides and the city of Monona, Wisconsin, on the lake's southeast shore. Lake Monona is a freshwater drainage lake in Dane County, Wisconsin. It is the second-largest of a group of four lakes along the Yahara River in the region, which also includes Mendota, Kegonsa, and Waubesa. It also serves as the southernmost point of the isthmus that divides Madison from the rest of the state. Although the lake was originally called "Tchee-ho-bo-kee-xa-te-la" or "Teepee Lake" by the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago), the name "Monona" is thought to signify "lovely".
The 3,359-acre lake serves as the city's recreation and leisure area. The backdrop of the capitol dome as you kayak, windsurf, or sit on a park bench to watch the sunset is what makes it particularly exceptional and beautiful.
Madison residents can be seen ice fishing, ice skating, and snowkiting across the lake throughout the winter. In the summer, there are 18 parks and open places near Lake Monona where you may go swimming, boating, or fishing. The lake's many miles of walking and biking trails, combined with Madison's walkable center, make it simple to combine water activities with visits to other sights on the same day.
