Madeira's Carnival

Madeira's Carnival is said to be celebrated with a traditional dessert called 'Sonhos,' which comes from the Portuguese word for dreams. These treats are created with wheat and eggs and drizzled with a local honey called "Sugar Cane." Although most Madeirans find it an acquired taste, I'm confident that after you've had one of these delicacies, you'll be planning your next trip to Madeira. Sonhos are available at most bakeries and cafés on the island.

Despite being the shortest month of the year, February is jam-packed with events. The Madeira's Carnival is one of them. Floats, bizarre costumes, and drum rhythms will have you on the edge of your seat. The Madeira Festival in 2022 is expected to have a lighthearted tone, mocking social and political concerns. In this stunning carnival event, dress up as your favorite meme, march through the streets, or tap your feet to the rhythms of the drum.

Musical parades, partying, and dressing up in odd outfits and masks are all part of Madeiran customs. On the streets, Carnival means endless parades, dancing, and plenty of food and drink. Funchal holds a colorful and spectacular float procession with a thousand participants and thousands of onlookers on Saturday night. The Madeira Carnival's major attraction is this. Music and dancing kick off the procession.
