Mario Lemieux is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins for parts of 17 NHL seasons from 1984 to 2006 until becoming the team's owner in 1999. He is currently a co-owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
As a youngster, Lemieux thrived in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, establishing a league record with 282 points in 70 games during the 1983–84 season. The Pittsburgh Penguins selected him first overall in the 1984 National Hockey League (NHL) draft. Lemieux had a fantastic debut season, scoring 100 points, making the All-Star team, and winning the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's rookie of the year. He had at least 100 points in each of his first six seasons in Pittsburgh and was voted the NHL's Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 1987–88, although the Penguins only made the playoffs once during that time and were ousted in the second round.
Lemieux is widely considered to be one of the best players of all time. With a net worth of more than $150 million, he is the second richest player on the list.
