Moroni
Moroni is located at the foot of Mount Karthala, 10 km northwest of the crater.
Moroni, the capital of Comoros, is located on Grande Comore Island. There's a beautiful, particularly Arabian air here that makes you feel like you're on a different planet from the rest of the islands. The tiny alleys are lined with charming stores and cafes, and the residents dress in traditional garb. Enjoy the Volvo Market and pick up some wonderful souvenirs, spices, and handicrafts from local craftsmen. Get lost in the meandering lanes of the medina near the Friday Mosque. Like the rest of Comoros, there aren't many typical tourist attractions, but the beauty more than compensates.
Moroni has various mosques, the oldest of which is the Badjanani Mosque or Ancienne Mosquée de Vendredi (Old Friday Mosque). There are also Christian churches: Apostolic Representative of the Comoros Islands, along with Protestant and evangelical churches.
- Location: on the island of Ngazidja's western coast, Comoros.
