Mount Karthala

Mount Karthala, located on Grande Comore, is the world's biggest active volcano. Its height is a little over 2300 meters, and it has erupted every 11 years since the early nineteenth century. The most recent eruption occurred in 2005 and lasted 14 days! The volcano caused significant damage in 2005, but the country has recovered well. That is why it is one of the best places in Comoros worth seeing. The odd yet breathtaking scenery created by the lava will captivate you, and it will make the trekking experience one-of-a-kind. You can climb to the rim of the volcano, but it's a challenging two-day walk.

The mountain is covered with wet evergreen forest. Higher up, the vegetation is made up of stunted trees and heathland, which is home to the enormous heath Erica cosmogenesis. Many of the species found on the mountain are only found in Comoros, and four bird species can only be found on the mountain's slopes: Humblot's Flycatcher, Comoro White-eye, Comoro Drongo, and Karthala Scops Owl. The forest on the mountain is under threat from logging and agricultural expansion. A natural reserve has been planned to cover the mountain, although it has yet to be established.
