Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta
Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nornickel located in Harjavalta, Finland. Nornickel's Russian feedstock and nickel-bearing raw materials supplied from third-party suppliers are processed at the facility. It is Finland's only nickel refinery and one of Europe's top nickel producers, having been established in 1959. Nickel cathodes and briquettes, nickel salts, powders, and solutions, cobalt sulfate and solution, and PGM-bearing copper cake are the final products of Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta.
Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta produced 63.4 kt of saleable nickel in 2020 (up 1.5% year on year), an all-time high for the refinery. The rearrangement of refining facilities and increasing nickel feedstock supplies from Kola MMC drove this rise. The Company decided to phase in increased nickel production capacity at Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta beginning in 2021.
Harjavalta has a nickel product capability of 66 ktpa. The facility employs sulphuric acid leaching, which achieves metal recovery rates of more than 98%, and is considered the best practice in the global mining and metals business. Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta contributed 27%, 1%, and 1% of the Group's total nickel, copper, and PGM finished products, respectively, in 2020.
