Original 1959 Barbie
Barbie first appeared in 1959, and any original Barbie doll is highly valuable. Of course, the condition of an Original 1959 Barbie affects her value. Even an Original 1959 Barbie in poor condition might sell for a few hundred dollars. On the other hand, any original Barbie in mint condition with all of her original accessories and even her box can sell for more than $25,000.
When buying or selling an original Barbie, check for a "Made in Japan" stamp on the bottom of one foot, separated fingers rather than the joined fingers found on most Barbies, "Barbie" stamped on one hip, and a high ponytail style.
The first Barbie was available in blonde or brunette form, clothed in a Hollywood-style bathing suit with dramatic red lips and thick black eyeliner — and approximately 350,000 were sold for a startling $3 each in that first year.
According to The Richest, the only way to tell if a doll is a genuine first edition is to look at the doll's feet, which have holes in the bottom. The second edition, which was essentially the same as the first but without the holes, was released the following year.
While this Barbie is about $8,000, a flawless condition doll recently sold at auction for $27,450.
