Osijek – Heart Of Slavonia

Croatia's coast is home to nearly all of the country's popular tourist destinations. That is why a large number of tourists visit Dalmatia or Istria. Croatia's interior, however, is equally stunning! The Slavonia region, to be precise. But don't get it mixed up with Slovenia or Slovakia! For non-Europeans, it can be a little perplexing. The reason for this is that all three names are likely derived from the same root word: Slaven. Slovenia, Slovakia, and Slavonia are all known as "the land of the Slavs."

Because Osijek is located on the Drava River, there are several options for crossing it. You can either walk across the bridge or take a "kompa." You can't actually DRIVE it because it's a type of ferry. Rather, you simply follow the river's current. But don't worry; a steel rope keeps kompa connected to the mainland at all times. As a result, it's one of the things you'll have to try while you're here.

If you're looking for a relaxing vacation, either alone or with your family, Osijek might be the place for you. Of course, there will be more activities during the summer. However, you can always go see the cultural landmarks. Some of the buildings in Osijek are particularly interesting because they were purposefully left unfinished. Some of the damage they sustained during the 1990s war was left undamaged. It was painted red to make it stand out even more. These "wounded structures" are currently monument-like places to remember the tragic past of Croatia and Osijek itself.
