Overwatch

Overwatch is a team-based online game that is often played as a first-person shooter. The game has a variety of game types, most of them revolve around squad-based fighting between two opposing teams of six players each. Players choose one of over two dozen pre-made hero characters from one of three class types: Damage heroes, who deal the majority of the damage to attack or defend control points, Tank heroes, who can absorb a significant amount of damage, and Support heroes, who provide healing or other buffs to their teammates.

Each hero has a distinct skill set that defines their intrinsic characteristics such as health points and running speed, as well as their primary attacks, several active and passive skills, and an ultimate ability that can only be used after it has been charged by dealing damage to enemies and healing allies. Overwatch's design objective was to foster dynamic team compositions that react to the environment, so players can change their hero during a round. Because of the game's focus on individual characters and classes, some writers have referred to it as a "hero shooter".

Game modes include casual play, competitive ranked play, and support for esports contests such as Blizzard's Overwatch League. These modes are often focused on successively gaining possession of points on the map or escorting a payload between points on the map, with one side assaulting while the other defends. Other modes reserved for casual battles include solo and team deathmatch, capture-the-flag, and seasonal event-specific games. Users may now create their own game modes using a restricted set of scripting tools in more recent releases. Since the game's release, new characters and stages have been introduced on a regular basis, increasing the initial hero roster from 21 to 32 by April 2020.
