Phillips Exeter Academy
For decades, Phillips Exeter Academy, or Exeter, has acted as an unofficial feeder for Harvard, serving boys and girls in grades 9-12 (with a post-graduate year available). It is also one of the best boarding schools in the world.
Academic excellence is a distinguishing feature of Phillips Exeter Academy. It promotes students' development of critical thinking skills and exploration of complex truths in all disciplines and curriculum levels. Through rigorous inquiry and purposeful debate, intellectual exploration at the Harkness table encourages inquisitiveness, creativity, insight, empathy, independent thought, and mastery in children.
Students can choose from nearly 450 courses in 19 subject areas in true Exeter style. The Harkness method is a strategy that encourages dialogue-based learning. The innovative math curriculum emphasizes problem sets and seminar-based learning, replacing standard textbooks with student-owned learning procedures. Graduate degrees are held by more than 80% of the faculty.
Your dorm is your home base from day one at Phillips Exeter Academy. As a new student, you make your first friends, and younger students turn to you for advice, encouragement, and companionship over time.
Students frequently stay in the same dorm from year to year, making it easy to build strong ties with your peers as well as the network of adult advisers who are the most familiar with you.
The residential plan is crucial to establishing a welcoming community. You'll meet people you'd never meet otherwise: international students who come to Exeter to live and learn. Day students are allocated to a dorm and participate completely in its activities.
You will meet dozens of people who share your interests among over 1,000 students as your classmates. Painting to zoology is among the student-led groups, and more are added each year based on current interests. The Student Programs Office is continuously on the lookout for programs that will engage and inform students.
