Polytechnic University of Tirana
The Polytechnic University of Tirana (UPT) (Albanian: Universiteti Politeknik i Tiranës) is a public university in Tirana, Albania's capital. It grants degrees in engineering and other fields.
After the University of Tirana, the Polytechnic University of Tirana is Albania's oldest and one of the largest university. It was established in 1951 and now has around 10,000 students from Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, and North Macedonia. In 2012, on the occasion of Albania's 100th anniversary of independence, President Bujar Nishani bestowed a high honor badge on UPT. The Albanian Public Agency for Accreditation of Higher Education has fully accredited the university (APAAHE).
Six colleges and two research institutes are part of the university:
- Faculty of Civil Engineering
- Faculty of Information Technology
- Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
- Faculty of Geology and Mining
- Faculty of Electrical Engineering
- Faculty of Mathematics and Physics
- Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism
- Geosciences Institute
- Institute of Energy, Water and Environment
The Geosciences Institute of Energy, Water, and Environment at PUT prioritizes teaching over research. It awards three-year Bachelor's degrees, two-year Master's degrees, and three- to five-year doctoral degrees. The academic programs are in accordance with the Bologna system. Albanian is the language of instruction, with English used for special and/or exchange courses.
The Department of Architecture and Urban Planning (DAUP), which is part of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, is one of the most competitive departments at PUT. It accepts about 120 students per year from a candidate pool that can be as large as 360. DAUP is Albania's largest architecture and urban planning department, with 35 full-time tenure-track professors, 40 adjunct professors, and 16 guest professors. It provides five-year integrated programs (Bachelor + Master) in architecture and urban planning. The education of students in structural engineering and building technology is a major focus of the curriculum in the architecture program. The urban planning program focuses on urban design and landscape architecture. Aside from the integrated diplomas, DAUP offers a 3-5 year Ph.D./Doctorate program with three tracks: Architecture Design, Urban Planning, and Historic Preservation and Restoration.
