The University of Tirana was founded in 1957 by the merger of five existing institutes of higher education, the most important of which was the Institute of Sciences, founded in 1947. Immediately following Enver Hoxha's death in 1985, the university was renamed the Enver Hoxha University of Tirana and remained so until 1992.
The university is the largest and most prestigious in Albania. It has eight colleges, fifty academic departments, and forty-one study programs or majors. The majority of programs are offered in Tirana, with a few smaller affiliated campuses located in other Albanian cities such as Saranda in the south and Kukës in the north. According to the Bologna system, it offers three-year Bachelor, one- or two-year Master, and three- to five-year doctorate degree programs.
The current campus is both urban and distributed. A new large and centrally located campus is being planned for Tirana's southeast outskirts. Dorms for students are located in a separate area called Student City (Qyteti Studenti) in southeast Tirana.
With 35 000 students, UT is Albania's largest university and one of the largest in Europe. The college accepted 95 new Ph.D. students in 2013. These are bachelor's degree-holding students.
