Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

While Iceland has some lovely beaches, the Reynisfjara black-sand beach on the country's southern coast has an otherworldly aspect. This one-of-a-kind beach is famed for its black sand and jagged sea stacks that protrude from the often-ferocious waves flowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The illumination at this beach adds to its contrasted attraction, making it a must-see for anybody who appreciates photography.

Reynisfjara's black-sand beach, like many natural places in Iceland, is associated with gloomy folklore. According to mythology, the rocky basalt sea stacks were originally trolls hauling seafaring ships to shore in the middle of the night, and they turned to stone during daylight. You are unlikely to spot any trolls during your visit, but you may glimpse some of the thousands of seabirds that nest in the columns, such as puffins, guillemots, and fulmars. The 2.5-hour drive from Reykjavik to the beach is simple, or you can book a guided tour along the southern coast that includes this as a stop if you want to spend more time at other attractions on that side of the island.
